Stanford, Ca. - Tony Azevedo scored four goals and Thomas Hopkins added three more to lead the second-ranked Stanford men's water polo team to a 13-3 victory over #9 Long Beach State in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game on Sunday at the Avery Aquatic Center.
Stanford jumped to a 4-0 lead with 32 seconds left in the first period on goals by Hopkins, Greg Crum, Azevedo and Trent Wiesen. Long Beach State did not score its first goal until three seconds left in the opening period by Jay Gerardi.
Two goals by Azevedo stretched Stanford's lead to 6-1 at halftime.
Hopkins scored two of Stanford's four goals in the third period as the Cardinal's lead jumped to 10-2.
Chad Taylor collected 14 saves in goal for the Cardinal.
Azevedo now has a team-leading 56 goals on the season. His school record career total now is 308.
Stanford upped its season record to 18-3 overall and 6-1 in the MPSF. The 49ers fell to 14-9 overall and 3-3 in the conference.
Stanford hosts California on Nov. 13 at 11:30 a.m.
