Santa Barbara, Calif. - Stanford fell to No. 5 ranked UC Santa Barbara at Harder Stadium on Saturday evening, 1-0. Goalkeeper Robby Fulton made five saves in net for the Cardinal, who was out-shot by an 11-2 margin on the evening. With the loss, Stanford's overall mark falls to 7-5-5, while UC Santa Barbara improves to 15-2-1 on the season.
After a scoreless first half that saw both sides combine for four shots, UCSB picked up its offense in the second half, and broke through with the game's only score in the 55th minute. Junior Jonathan Davis collected a pass from Drew McAthy on the left side and passed back to McAthy, who was streaking into the Cardinal box. UC Santa Barbara's career scoring leader shot from 15-yards out, beating a diving Fulton to the near post to put the Gauchos ahead.
Fulton was strong in net, collecting five saves on the night. Dan Kennedy made one save for a stingy UCSB defense. Senior Aaron Maines and freshman Evan Morgan logged the only shots of the night for Stanford.
The Cardinal returns to the Bay Area to close out the regular season against Cal in Berkeley next Saturday. The two squads battled to a 2-2 tie at Maloney Field in early October, with Stanford scoring a pair second half goals to earn the draw.
