Stanford, Calif. - Freshman Danika Dukes pitched a strong four-plus innings in relief to lead the 10th ranked Stanford softball team to a 3-2 win over Pacific today. The Cardinal improve to 6-1 overall while the Tigers take their first loss of the season to fall to 7-1.
Stanford scored all three runs in the bottom of the first inning as Jackie Rinehart led off the inning with a single. Katherine Hoffman singled to advance Rinehart to second then Catalina Morris was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Rinehart scored on Lauren Lappin's groundout as Morris and Hoffman advanced. Jessica Allister walked to load the bases. After the second Cardinal out, Leah Nelson walked to score Morris. Michelle Thiry singled to score Allister to close out the Stanford runs.
With Stanford leading 3-1 in the bottom of the seventh, the Tigers scored a run and had runners on second and third with two outs. Senior Dana Sorensen entered the game and struck out the last batter to end the game.
Katherine Hoffman led the Cardinal with a 2-for-3 day at the plate. Danika Dukes picked up her second win of the season (2-0) going 4.2 innings, allowing four hits and one run. Sorensen notched her first save of the season as well.
Cathie Hacker took the loss for Pacific, only lasting 0.2 innings, allowing three runs on three hits.
With the win, Stanford will face Missouri today at 4 p.m. Pacific will take on Santa Clara in the late game tonight.
