Stanford, Calif. - Sophomore centerfielder Catalina Morris hit her first homerun of the season to help the No. 10 Stanford softball team to a 4-1 victory over Santa Clara in the championship game of the Stanford Invitational this afternoon at the Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium. The Cardinal improve to 8-1 on the year while the Broncos fall to 4-11.
Stanford is now on a seven-game winning streak heading into the Palm Springs Tournament next weekend.
The Cardinal got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the second as Meghan Sickler, who doubled earlier, scored on an error by the shortstop.
Stanford scored two more in the bottom of the third as Jackie Rinehart led off the inning with a double. Morris then homered to rightfield to give the Cardinal a 3-0 lead.
The Cardinal notched one more run in the bottom of the fourth after Lindsay Key scored on a double by Heather Shook.
Santa Clara scored one unearned run in the top of the seventh.
Senior Dana Sorensen (4-1) picked up the win in the circle, scattering five hits over seven innings with five strikeouts and no walks. Bronco Jaime Forman-Lau (4-8) took the loss for Santa Clara, allowing six hits and four runs over six innings with three strikeouts.
Jackie Rinehart went 1-for-3 at the plate with a run scored and notched her fourth stolen base of the season.
Santa Clara was led by Jessica Clee who went 3-for-3 with an RBI against the Cardinal.
