Cathedral City, Calif. - Sophomore Laura Severson pitched six strong innings to help the No. 8 Stanford softball team to a 3-1 win over Coastal Carolina this afternoon at the Palm Springs Classic in Cathedral City, Calif. The Cardinal improve to 10-2 on the year.
Coastal Carolina scored a single run in the third inning and held the Cardinal scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning.
After an infield single by Jackie Rinehart, Katherine Hoffman laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Rinehart over. Catalina Morris singled to centerfield to score Rinehart to tie up the game. With Morris moving to third on a wild pitch, Lauren Lappin singled to score her. Lappin stole second then was brought home on a double by Jessica Allister.
Laura Severson improved her record to 3-0 with the win. Severson pitched six innings, allowing only one run while striking out seven. Dana Sorensen picked up her first save of the season pitching a scoreless seventh inning.
Christina Doyle took the loss for Coastal Carolina, going six innings, allowing three runs and five hits.
Catalina Morris had a 2-for-2 day at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Jessica Allister went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
Stanford closes out play at the Palm Springs Classic against Penn State on Sunday.
