Tucson, Ariz. - Stanford shortstop Lauren Lappin slugged a grand slam to left field to give the No. 8-ranked Cardinal softball team a mercy-rule victory over Boston University in Arizona's Worth Wildcat Invitational softball tournament Saturday. The Cardinal improve to 13-4 on the year.
Cardinal pitcher Laura Severson (4-1) tossed a one-hitter, striking out eight.
The blast evened Stanford's tourney record at 2-2 and dropped BU to 1-2. The Terriers will play Oklahoma State (1-1) in the game following. Boston University is 5-8 overall.
Stanford's Meghan Sickler hit a line drive just over the left field fence for a two-run home run in the bottom of the second to stake the Cardinal to an early lead.
SU (13-4) added another run in the fourth with an RBI single by Sickler after a Jessica Allister double. And then, in the fifth, Heather Shook started the five-run rally with a lead-off double. She scored on Catalina Morris' single.
Lauren Lappin went 2-for-3 at the plate with four RBI and two runs scored while teammate Meghan Sickler had a 2-for-2 effort with three RBI. Heather Shook also turned in 2-for-2 day with a run scored.
