Stanford, Calif. - Senior pitcher Dana Sorensen tallied a season high 15 strikeouts to lead the 12th-ranked Stanford softball team to a 1-0 win over Hawaii at Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium in Stanford, Calif. The Cardinal improve to 23-7 overall while the Wahine fall to 17-17.
Stanford's lone run came in the bottom of the fourth inning. With two outs on the board, catcher Jessica Allister singled through the left side the get things started for the Cardinal. Meghan Sickler singled to advance Allister to second then Leah Nelson singled up the middle to score Allister.
Dana Sorensen (13-4) scattered two hits over seven innings with 15 strikeouts and no walks on the evening. Melissa Coogan took the loss for Hawaii, pitching six innings, allowing one run on five hits with five strikeouts.
Jessica Allister led the Cardinal with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate and a run scored. Leah Nelson and Meghan Sickler went 1-for-2 with an RBI for Nelson.
Stanford will now take on UC Riverside in their second game in the Stanford Classic.
In the earlier games, Illinois defeated BYU, 3-2, Hawaii defeated Illinois, 4-0, and BYU beat UC Riverside 9-5.
