Stanford, Calif. - Senior pitcher Dana Sorensen tossed a no-hitter in No. 12 Stanford softball's 1-0 victory over Hawaii in the championship game of the Stanford Classic today at Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium. The Cardinal took top honors in the tourney, going 7-0.
Stanford improves to 27-7 on the year while the Wahine fall to 18-19. Today's win puts the Cardinal on a season-high seven game winning streak.
It was a pitcher's dual for the most of the game until Stanford scored its only run in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs on the scoreboard, Jackie Rinehart hit an infield single. Katherine Hoffman reached base on a error by the thirdbaseman as Rinehart advanced to second. Then sophomore Catalina Morris singled to centerfield to score Rinehart and give the Cardinal the lead.
Dana Sorensen (15-4) pitched her first no-hitter of the season, going seven innings with 13 strikeouts and no walks. She faced 22 batters, just one over the minimum. A hit-by-pitch in the top of the fifth broke up the perfect game. Melissa Coogan took the loss for Hawaii, allowing one unearned run on five hits over six innings.
Jackie Rinehart had a 2-for-3 day at the plate with a run scored and a stolen base while shortstop Lauren Lappin also turned in a two hit performance (2-for-3).
The Cardinal open up conference play next week, hosting Oregon State on Friday, April 2 at 7 p.m. in Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium.
