Rinehart Collects Five Hits As Stanford Defeats CS Northridge 7-3

Fullerton, Calif. - Freshman Jackie Rinehart went five-for-five, just one hit shy of the single game record, as the 10th-ranked Stanford softball team defeated Cal State Northridge, 7-3, this afternoon, in the CS Fullerton Worth Invitational. The Cardinal improve to 15-5 overall, while the Matadors fall to 11-5.

The Cardinal got on the board early, scoring four runs in the top of the second inning. Second baseman Lindsay Key singled with one out to get things started. Rightfielder Heather Shook was hit by a pitch and Jackie Hansen entered the game as a pinch runner. First baseman Jackie Rinehart doubled to bring home Key then leftfielder Katherine Hoffman singled in Hansen. Centerfielder Catalina Morris grounded out to the second baseman as Rinehart scored. Shortstop Lauren Lappin knocked in Hoffman to close out the Cardinal scoring.

The Matadors scored two runs in the bottom of the third, both with two outs, to close the gap to 4-2.

Stanford came back to score in the top of the fourth as Rinehart and Hoffman recorded back-to-back singles. Morris was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Lappin singled in Rinehart and Hoffman. An error by the second baseman brought home Morris to put the Cardinal up 7-2.

CS Northridge countered with a run in the bottom of the sixth.

Dana Sorensen (8-3) picked up the win in the circle for Stanford, going seven innings, allowing eight hits, two earned runs and 11 strikeouts.

Katherine Hoffman added three hits (3-for-5), two runs and one RBI while teammate Lauren Lappin went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Meghan Sickler added two hits to the Cardinal cause as well.

Stanford is back in action tomorrow taking on Portland State at 2 p.m.
