Fullerton, Calif. - Sophomore pitcher Laura Severson pitched a complete game shutout as the 10th-ranked Stanford softball team defeated Portland State, 4-0, this afternoon, at the CS Fullerton Worth Invitational. The Cardinal improve to 16-5 on the year and 3-0 in the tournament.

Stanford struck first, scoring two runs in the top of the third inning. Two errors by the third baseman put Lindsay Key and Katherine Hoffman on base. Sophomore Catalina Morris singled up the middle to score both.

The Vikings loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth with only one out but sophomore pitcher Laura Severson got Erin Stokey to hit into a fielder's choice then struck out Kira Enlow to end the threat.

In the top of the sixth an error by the first baseman put Catalina Morris on board with no outs. Lauren Lappin singled then both runners advanced on a wild pitch by Vanessa Holm. Jessica Allister singled to rightfield to bring home Morris as Lappin advanced to third. Leah Nelson hit a deep sacrifice fly to center to score Lappin as the Cardinal opened up a 4-0 lead.

Jackie Rinehart went 2-for-3 at the plate with a sacrifice bunt to lead the Cardinal. Catalina Morris had a 1-for-3 effort with two RBI.

Starting pitcher Laura Severson (6-2) scattered two hits over seven innings with four strikeouts to record her third shutout. PSU's Vanessa Holm took the loss for the Vikings, allowing six hits, four runs (one earned) with three strikeouts.

Stanford takes on UC Santa Barbara this afternoon before taking on CS Fullerton tomorrow at 1 p.m. to close out tournament play.
