Moraga, Calif. - The Stanford softball team dropped the first game of a doubleheader to St. Mary's College by a score of 2-1 in Moraga, Calif. The Cardinal fall to 34-12 on the year while the Gaels improve to 10-36 overall.
Stanford got on the board first, scoring a run in the top of the third as Catalina Morris singled with one out. Lauren Lappin hit a double to right as Morris moved to third. Jessica Allister then hit an RBI single to score Morris.
St. Mary's scored one in the bottom of the third as the catcher Eleni Papailias hit an RBI single.
The Gaels tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth as Shelly Taketa doubled to score Marcia-Marie Euker.
Senior Dana Sorensen (21-7) took the loss in the circle for the Cardinal, allowing two runs on five hits over six innings of work. Jennifer Eaton (6-21) picked up the win for the Gaels, scattering six hits over seven innings, allowing one run with five strikeouts.
Sophomore Catalina Morris went 2-for-2 with a run scored to lead Stanford. Senior Jessica Allister went 1-for-3 with an RBI as well. Elizabeth Bendig had a 1-for-2 day at the plate.
The two teams now meet for the second game of the doubleheader.
