Stanford, Ca - Thomas Hopkins and Greg Crum each scored four goals to power the Stanford water polo team to a 16-4 victory over Santa Clara in the season opener for both teams on Saturday at the Avery Aquatic Center.
Crum opened the game with a goal at 6:48 of the first period and the Cardinal added five straight goals to take a 6-0 lead after one period. Santa Clara's Whit Gilfillan broke the Stanford streak with a goal at 5:46 of the second period followed by a Bronco goal by Matthew Martin at 4:55 to cut Stanford's lead to 6-2. After that, Stanford scored nine straight goals to take a 15-2 lead with 1:19 in the third period. Three of those goals were scored by Tyler Drake.
Crum scored a career-high four goals with two goals in the first period, one in the third period and one in the fourth quarter. Hopkins, who was Stanford's second leading scorer with 47 goals last year, also scored four times, the third time in his three-year Cardinal career that he has accomplished that feat.
Sam Tyre scored two goals while Peter Varellas, Ryan Fortune and Forrest Schwartz each chipped in with one apiece.
Martin led Santa Clara with two goals.
A trio of Stanford goalkeepers (Chad Taylor, Beau Stockstill, Sandy Hohner) combined for six saves.
Stanford hosts defending NCAA champion USC on Sept. 25. The game has been rescheduled from 1:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
