Stanford Earns High Marks In Season Outdoor Opener

Stanford, Ca - On a bright, sunny day at Cobb Track & Angell Field, the Stanford men's and women's track & field team opened the 2005 outdoor season. Several athletes attained NCAA Regional qualifying standards.

Solomon Welch won the triple jump competition with an effort of 51-9 (15.77m). That bettered the regional standard of 49-5 3/4 (15.08m). In the women's 1,500 meters, regional qualifiers were Amanda Trotter (4:26.71), Teresa McWalters (4:27.25), Lindsay Allen (4:27.69) and Jeane Goff (4:27.74). Deborah Akinniyi triple jumped 40-2 3/4 (12.26m) to gain regional qualifying status.

Two women hammer throwers performed with high marks. Sarah Hopping won the competition at 186-11 (56.98m) while Katy Elsbury finished second 178-10 (54.51m). The regional standard was 177-8 (54.15m).

Erin Merriman easily earned her way into the NCAA Regionals with a javelin throw of 158-3 (48.23m).™
