Series Notes: Washington has taken two of the last three season series over the Cardinal, winning two-of-three in Seattle in both 2002 and 2004 • However, Stanford has won eight of the nine games and all three of the series played between the teams at Sunken Diamond since the Pac-10 North and South Divisions merged in 1999 • Stanford has the only two series sweeps (2000, '01) in the six seasons since the Pac-10 merge • The teams also played twice in Pac-10 playoffs between the North and South Divisions in 1997 and 1998 with Washington taking both series and four of the five contests played between the clubs

• Pac-10 Update - Two-time defending Pac-10 champion Stanford is currently tied for sixth-place with Washington as both schools have 4-5 conference records • Stanford is still within striking distance of the top of the Pac-10 standings, sitting 4.5 games behind league-leader Arizona (10-2 Pac-10) but only three games behind the Wildcats in the loss column • Stanford has won at least a share of a Pac-10 or Pac-10 Southern Division title in six of the last eight years and has picked up 20 conference titles in school history • Stanford, who was picked in a preseason poll of the Pac-10 coaches to win the conference title again in 2005

• Home Sweet Home - Despite losing more games at home this season than the Cardinal did all of last year (29-5 home record in 2004) with a 15-6 mark at Sunken Diamond in 2005, Stanford has still has a 55-12 record in its last 67 games on The Farm

• Rankings - Stanford fell 10 spots to No. 24 in this week's Baseball America poll (April 18) after being swept in a three-game Pac-10 series at Arizona State last Friday-Sunday • Stanford has fallen 14 places in the last two Baseball America polls after having moved back into the Top 10 at No. 10 for one week (April 4) for the first time since February 14 • Stanford dropped to No. 19 in Sports Weekly/ESPN rankings (-5), No. 26 in the Collegiate Baseball poll (-8) and No. 28 in the NCBWA poll (-13) Stanford has been ranked No. 1 in the Baseball America poll at some point in the season during seven of the last eight campaigns prior to this season but has not reached the top in 2005 with the highest spot the Cardinal has reached being No. 6 • Texas is the No. 1 team this week in the Baseball America, NCBWA and Sports Weekly polls, while Tulane is Collegiate Baseball's top squad

• This Week's Remaining Opponent (Washington) - Washington is 24-14 overall and 4-5 in the Pac-10, tied for sixth-place in the conference along with Stanford • Washington was picked second in the Pac-10 during a preseason conference poll but struggled out of the gates, losing their first four games of the season and opening with a 4-7 record after 11 games but are 20-7 since • The Huskies also had a rough start in Pac-10 action, starting 1-4 but have won four of their last five conference games • Washington has put up nice pitching (3.97 ERA, #3 Pac-10) and defensive (.979, #2 Pac-10) numbers this season and is hitting at a respectable .292 (#6 Pac-10) clip, while scoring 7.0 runs per contest • Brent Lillibridge (.333, 7 HR, 36 RBI, 10 SB) is the club's offensive leader, while Matt Hague is hitting .462 (24-52) in limited action • Kyle Larsen's seven homers co-lead the club along with Lillibridge, while Taylor Johnson has a team-high 12 stolen bases • Ace Tim Lincecum has the lowest opponents' batting average in the Pac-10 (.179), while also ranking among the conference leaders in strikeouts (80, #3), batters struck out looking (25, #3T), victories (6-4, #4T), innings pitched (67.1, #5T) and ERA (2.94, #6)

• Recent Action - (April 19 - at Stanford 8, San Jose State 2) Michael Taylor (4-4, 3 RBI) hit for the cycle and tied a career-high four hits to lead Stanford to an 8-2 victory over San Jose State. Taylor became the first Stanford player to hit for the cycle since Edmund Muth pulled it off at UCLA on February 22, 1998. Taylor's home run was one of a season-high four hit by the Cardinal as John Mayberry, Jr., Brendan Domaracki and Jed Lowrie also went deep with Domaracki's the first of his collegiate career. Erik Davis picked up the victory as the first of three pitchers in a predetermined rotation, allowing just one run and scattering five hits with three strikeouts and a walk over the first 4.0 frames • (April 17 - at Arizona State 10, Stanford 9) Arizona State completed a three-game sweep of Stanford with a wild 10-9 victory, using a seven-run sixth inning in a comeback win with Travis Buck's bases-clearing three-RBI double keying the big rally. Jim Rapoport (4-5, HR, career-high 4 RBI, SB) had the second career four-hit game and a career-high four RBI, while Adam Sorgi (4-5, 2B, RBI) also equaled a career-best with four hits to lead a Stanford offense that outhit Arizona State, 17-11 • (April 16 - at Arizona State 6, Stanford 5) Arizona State rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning for a 6-5 victory over Stanford. Joe Persichina drew a two-out bases loaded walk from Stanford reliever Nolan Gallagher to bring home Colin Curtis with the game-winning run. Travis Buck had a two-run homer off losing pitcher Blake Holler earlier in the inning to tie the contest. John Mayberry, Jr. (2-3, 2B, RBI, SB), Chris Lewis (2-4, 2B, RBI) and Jim Rapoport (2-4) had two hits each for the Cardinal • (April 15 - at Arizona State 9, Stanford 2) Arizona State scored all nine of its runs in the first four innings and cruised to a 9-2 victory over Stanford • Jeff Larish (2-3, HR, 3 RBI) homered for Arizona State, while Jim Rapoport homered for the Cardinal

• Stanford Swept In Pac-10 Series For First Time Since 1997 - Stanford's three-game sweep at the hands of Arizona State in it most recent series April 15-17 in Tempe, Arizona, marked the first time the Cardinal had been swept in a Pac-10 series since April 11-13, 1997, when the Sun Devils also swept the Cardinal at Sunken Diamond

• Home Series Streak Ends At 14 - Stanford had won 14 straight regular season home series before Oregon State took two-of-three at Sunken Diamond on April 9-10 • Prior to the series loss to the Beavers, Stanford had last lost a home series when Arizona won two-of-three on The Farm from April 25-27, 2003 • The Oregon State series victory also ended a run of five consecutive home Pac-10 series victories

• Michael Taylor Hits For Cycle - Michael Taylor became the first Stanford player to hit for a cycle since 1998 (Edmund Muth, February 22 at UCLA) when he accomplished the rare feat versus San Jose State on April 19 • Taylor hit his first collegiate home run in the second inning, followed by a triple in the third, a double in the fifth and a single in the eighth

• Head Coach Mark Marquess - Head coach Mark Marquess, in his 29th season at the helm of the Stanford program, now has an all-time record of 1211-579-5 (.676) • On March 5, 2005, he became just the 16th NCAA Division I head coach to reach the 1200-career win mark when Stanford defeated California by a score of 10-3 at Sunken Diamond • He is currently ranked ninth among active Division I coaches in wins and is 16th on the NCAA's all-time list

• Jed Lowrie - Stanford's National Player of the Year candidate and First Team Preseason All-American has put up nice offensive numbers this season, leading the team in homers (11, #2T Pac-10), RBI (44, #3 Pac-10), slugging percentage (.632, #7 Pac-10), total bases (83), sacrifice flies (8, #1 Pac-10), walks (23, #8T Pac-10) and multiple-RBI games (14) to go with a .326 batting average that ranks third on the club • Defensively, he has made just one error in 166 chances for a .994 fielding percentage while leading the team and ranking fifth in the Pac-10 in assists (93)

• John Mayberry, Jr. - Stanford's First Team Preseason All-American leads the club in doubles (11) and multiple-hit games (16), while ranking second in hits (45), RBI (38) and multiple-RBI games (12) • Mayberry also boasts the team's second-longest hit streak of the season at eight games (February 5-20)

• Jim Rapoport - Stanford's hottest hitter now comfortably leads the team with a .392 batting average • Rapoport has a current career-high and team season-high 13-game hit streak, hitting an even .521 (25-48) during the run • He has also hit safely in 19 of his last 20 games to raise his average 139 points from the .231 make where it stood when he began the hot stretch • Rapoport also leads the club with 47 hits, eight stolen bases, five sacrifice bunts and a .467 on-base percentage

• Mark Romanczuk - Has won 28 career games at Stanford (28-9), good for a sixth-place tie on Stanford's all-time win list with Bruce Mignano (1979-82) and is just nine victories behind all-time school-leader Jeff Ballard's 37 from 1982-85 • Romanczuk has 5-4 record and a 4.98 ERA this season, while leading the team in strikeouts (52) and innings pitched (68.2, #4 Pac-10) • Romanczuk shares the Pac-10 lead with 11 games started • He is on the Roger Clemens Award Watch list for the award given annually to the nation's top pitcher

• Jeff Gilmore - Has posted a 5-1 with a 4.03 ERA that is the lowest among Stanford's regular starters and also has the lowest opponents' batting average (.243) among Stanford pitchers with at least one inning pitched per team game played • Second on the club in innings pitched (67.0 Pac-10, #7), strikeouts (50) and starts (10, #8T Pac-10)

• Blake Holler - Has developed into one of Stanford's top reliever, ranking tied for fourth in the Pac-10 in victories with a 6-2 record and ninth in ERA with a 3.18 mark • Leads the team with 12 appearances and has a 9.53 strikeout per nine innings ratio that is second on the club behind Nolan Gallagher's 10.43 that would be third on the school's single-season list

• Matt Manship - Has not been charged with a run in 11 appearances and 14.2 innings out of the bullpen this season • Has a 2-0 record and one save, striking out 11 and allowing a team-low opponents' batting average of .173

• Pitching Staff - Stanford's pitching staff has had an ERA under 4.00 for most of the season before the mark rose to a season-high 4.23 after allowing 25 earned runs in the team's three-game sweep at the hands of Arizona State from April 15 • After giving up just two runs in its most recent game, the team's ERA has dropped back down to 4.17 through 35 games • Stanford is attempting to record an ERA under 4.00 for the fourth time in the last six seasons • Opponents are hitting just .259 against Cardinal pitching

• Outstanding Defense - Stanford has been errorless in three of its last four games and now has an overall team fielding percentage of .980 that leads the Pac-10 and is three percentage points higher than the school record pace of .977 set by the 2001 club • Stanford has played errorless baseball in 18 of its 35 games, including a season-high stretch of four in a row from March 20-26 • In fact, Stanford has played outstanding defense in the past five seasons with five of its top seven team fielding percentages recorded during the period

• Offense Coming Around - Stanford's continues to come around from its early season woes as the Cardinal has its team batting average back up to .296, the highest its been since it stood at .324 after the team's third game of the season versus Fresno State but dropped all the way to .275 after getting just three hits the next game at Cal State Fullerton • Stanford has 28 hits in its last two contests, including a 17-hit game at Arizona State on April 17 that tied for the team's second-best showing of the campaign • Stanford is trying to extend a string of consecutive seasons with a batting average of .300 or better to 10 in a row with the Cardinal actually hitting .307 or better in each of its last nine campaigns • Stanford's current 6.7 run per game average is down 1.6 runs from last season's final average, when the Cardinal scored 8.3 runs per contest

• Tight Battle For Team Lead In Hits - Stanford has a tight battle going on for the team lead in hits with seven players having collected between 40 and 47 hits this season • Jim Rapoport leads the way with 47, followed by John Mayberry, Jr. (45), Jed Lowrie and Adam Sorgi (42), and Michael Taylor (35), John Hester (35) and Chris Minaker (35)

• Comeback Kids - Stanford has come from behind in nine of its 21 victories this season • The team's last two comeback wins have been the most crucial (a 4-3 victory over Oregon State on April 10) and the biggest (turning a 6-0 deficit into a 7-6 victory over Santa Clara on April 5) • Stanford has also trailed at one point in victories over Fresno State (January 29, January 30 - Game 2), Kansas (February 12), USC (February 26), California (March 5), Pacific (March 20) and Washington State (April 3)

• Soggy Season - Stanford has had six games postponed due to wet weather conditions this season • The Cardinal had its season-opener versus Fresno State (January 28) postponed, as well as series-openers against Kansas (February 11), California (February 25), Pacific (March 19) and Oregon State (April 8), and a single game against San Jose State (March 22) • Stanford made up the first four games as part of doubleheaders and played the Pacific contest on March 24 • The San Jose State rainout has not been rescheduled yet

• Winners - Stanford has won 40 or more games in a school record 10 consecutive campaigns and posted 11 consecutive winnings seasons, as well as 39 in the last 40 years and 56 in the past 58

• Omaha - Stanford has captured two national titles (1987, 1988) and advanced to the College World Series 15 times, including 13 appearances in the last 23 years and for a school record five consecutive seasons from 1999-2003
