May 21, 2005

Quotes | Notes

Athens, Ga. - No. 1 Stanford has now won 55 matches in a row and will advance to the NCAA Championship tomorrow against 11th-seeded Texas. The Cardinal (26-0) defeated No. 12 Clemson, 4-2, this afternoon at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex at the University of Georgia in the NCAA Championship Semifinals. Stanford will be making its 19th appearance in the NCAA finals and will be seeking its 14th team title.

The Cardinal started doubles with a quick 8-1 victory on court three by Whitney Deason and Theresa Logar, but it was a race to the finish on courts one and two as Stanford was only one game away from winning on both courts. Senior Erin Burdette served to a Stanford advantage and match point and with an ace on her next serve, Burdette secured the 8-3 victory on court two and the doubles point for Stanford.

In singles, Anne Yelsey finished first with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at court six to put Stanford ahead 2-0. Logar added a 6-0, 6-2 decision at court four to put Stanford one match away from victory. Clemson did not go down easy, though, and the Tigers picked up a 6-1, 7-6(3) at court one as No. 2 Julie Coin defeated No. 7 Amber Liu. With Deason leading 6-4, 5-2 on court five, Clemson earned a second win as Alix Lacelarie scored a 7-6(3), 6-2 victory over Burdette at court three. With Alice Barnes ahead 6-4, 3-1 on court two, Deason finished off Daniela Alvarez to clinch the Stanford victory.

Stanford will play in the title match for the seventh-straight year and 19th time in the 24-year history of the NCAA Women's Tennis Championship. Match time for tomorrow's final is set for 1 p.m. ESPN will broadcast the team finals on a tape delay on Wednesday, May 25 at noon (PT).
