Forty-six Stanford student-athletes will be competing this weekend (May 27-28) at the 2005 NCAA West Regional Track & Field Championships ... To qualify for the NCAA Track & Field Championship (June 8-11) at Sacramento State, collegiate athletes must compete at the NCAA Regionals which are taking place throughout the United States this weekend ... The West Regional will be contested at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field ... Automatic NCAA championship berths will be granted to the Top-5 finishers in each individual event at the regional, and to the Top-3 relay teams ... The NCAA will then supplement the championship field with the higheset-ranking competitors (roughly 6-7 per individual event and 3-4 per relay) from the national performance lists, provided the athlete competed at a regional competition and was not among the finishers to earn an automatic NCAA berth ... The lone exceptions are the 10,000 meters and multi-events, in which athletes qualify directly for the NCAA Championship by meeting provisional and automatic standards ... In the men's 10,000 meters, Ian Dobson has automatically qualified with a school record time of 27:59.72 (#1 among collegiate runners) at the Cardinal Invitational (5/1/05) ... Another Stanford qualifier is Brett Gotcher, who turned in a time of 28:59.27 at the Stanford Invitational (3/25/05) ... On the NCAA provisional list is Forrest Tahdooahnippah who was timed in 29:36.11 at the Stanford Invitational (3/25/05) and Neftalem Araia who was timed at 29:32.83 at the Pac-10 Championship (5/14/05) ... In the women's 10,000 meters, there are two NCAA automatic qualifiers, Anita Siraki who turned in a time of 33:37.04 at the Stanford Invitational (3/25/05) and Alicia Craig who was timed in 34:02.79 at the Pac-10 Championship (5/14/05) ... Craig is the two-time defending NCAA champion ... Julie Allen has a NCAA provisional time of 34:36.97.

Results Review
This is the third year of the Regional competition ... Last year, the Cardinal women finished third at Cal State Northridge ... Sara Bei won the regional title in the 5,000 meters for the second straight year with a itme of 16:12.26 ... Seven Top-5 finishes including a school record in the 400 meter relay propelled the Stanford men to a sixth place finish at the NCAA West Regional.

Conference Championship
UCLA's grip on the women's track & field Pac-10 championship has finally come to an end, thanks to Stanford University ... From 1997 through 2004, the Bruins won the eight straight Pac-10 titles, and since the league began sponsoring women's track & field in 1987, UCLA captured 15 of the league's previous 18 championship meets ... That all came to an end at UCLA's Drake Stadium as Stanford captured its first women's Pacific-10 Track & Field Championship (5/14 - 5/15/05) ... For the past two seasons, Stanford finished second to the Bruins, but in 2005, the Cardinal chalked up a school record 173 points to easily score a 48-point victory over the second place Bruins ... The 173 Stanford points was also fourth-most by a Pac-10 school in the 19-year existence of the conference championship meet ... The Stanford women were paced on the final day by victories in the 5,000 meters by Sara Bei, the 400 meter hurdles by Undine Becker, and an American junior and school record performances by freshman sensation Erica McLain ... McLain, who captured the Pac-10 title in the long jump the day before, added to her impressive resume with a victory in the triple jump with an American junior and school record jump of 45-2 1/2 (13.78m) ... McLain's effort was a Pac-10 meet record and the third-best mark in conference history ... McLain also became the first Pac-10 athlete to win the long jump and triple jump conference titles in the same year ... Bei led a 1-2 finish for Stanford in the 5,000 meters with a winning time of 16:47.57 ... Craig, who won the 10,000 meter title the day before, finished second (16:58.88) ... Becker ran a winning time of 58.59 in the 400 meter hurdles ... During the two days of competition, the Stanford women produced five Pac-10 champions and 24 Top-5 finishes. Of the 24 Stanford women who competed, 23 contributed points to the winning effort ... The Stanford men finished seventh with 66 points ... Oregon won the Pac-10 title for the second time in the last three years with 152 points ... Stanford produced one winner in men's competition on the final day of competition ... Michael Robertson, the conference favorite, won the discus competition with a throw of 192-7 (58.70m) ... Robertson became Stanford's first conference discus champion in 40 years (Bob Stoecker, 1965, 183-10 1/2).
