Chesthill Hill, Ma - The third-ranked Stanford women's volleyball team began its seven match, eleven day road trip with an overpowering 30-15, 30-15, 30-16 victory over Boston College in a non-league match Thursday night at the Silvio Conte Arena.
In game one, Stanford scored points in bunches. Five straight points gave Stanford a 6-1 lead followed by four straight to take a 10-3 lead, and then a match-high nine consecutive points to take a commanding 19-4 lead. That was Stanford's biggest lead of the match.
Game two offered more of the same as the Cardinal scored six straight points to take a 9-3 lead. The Eagles managed to cut the Stanford margin to five points, 10-5, but the Cardinal outscored the home team, 20-10, to take the game, 30-15.
Boston College managed to keep the game close to start game three. But at 5-4, Stanford began another run as the Cardinal scored four straight points, and extended the margin to 13 points at 22-9.
The match offered an opportunity for several Cardinal reserves (Kirsten Hornbeak, Jennifer Wilson, Michelle Mellard, Erin Waller) to see their first action of the season. Lizzie Suiter and Alex Fisher remain on the injured list.
Tonight's match will be seen in the Bay Area on a tape delayed basis on Sunday (Sept. 6) on Comcast.
Stanford continues tournament action on Friday (4:30 p.m., et) against Maine, and then on Saturday against Syracuse (2:00 p.m. et).
