Boulder, Co - Kristin Richards collected 14 kills and 12 digs, and freshman outside hitter Foluke Akinradewo added 13 kills to give the third-ranked Stanford women's volleyball team a 30-16, 30-23, 30-18 victory over Marquette University during second day action on Friday at the Colorado Invitational.
Stanford scored points in bunches in game one. Five straight points gave Stanford a 10-5 lead, and then seven straight points gave the Cardinal a 19-9 advantage. Stanford's biggest lead in the game was 14 points at 28-14. The game ended on a hitting error by the Golden Eagles to give the Cardinal a 30-16 decision. Stanford hit .333 and once again the Cardinal defense played well, holding Marquette to a 0.41 hitting percentage.
Stanford worked hard to earn a game two victory against the Golden Eagles. Stanford was never able to generate more than a two point lead for most of the game. But at 22-22, the Cardinal scored four straight points, and upped the lead to 29-23. A combo block by Foluke Akinradewo and Bryn Kehoe gave Stanford game point, and a 30-23 decision. In game two, Stanford hit .432.
In game three, eight straight points gave the Cardinal an 18-10 advantage, and then Stanford expanded the lead to ten points at 21-11. From there, the Golden Eagles got no closer than seven points, and eventually Stanford scored the game (30-18) and match winner on a kill from freshman outside hitter Cynthia Barboza.
The victory gives Stanford a six-match winning streak, and a 7-1 season record. Marquette falls to 5-2.
Stanford concludes play in the Colorado Invitational on Saturday against Creighton (Noon, mt).
