No. 5 Stanford Takes Fifth In A Row With 193-103 Win Over No. 18 USC

Stanford, Calif. - No. 5 Stanford (6-1, 4-0 Pac-10) continued its hot streak with its fifth consecutive win, a dominating 193-103 victory over No. 18 USC in a Pac-10 short-course yards dual meet Saturday on Senior Day at the Avery Aquatic Center. Caroline Bruce (100 breast, 200 breast, 400 IM) and Lacey Boutwell (50 free, 100 free, 200 free) each won three individual events to lead the Cardinal.

Stanford won 13 of the day's 16 races as Brooke Bishop (100 back, 200 back) added a pair of victories by sweeping the backstroke events for the second consecutive day, while Lauren Costella (1650 free), Elizabeth Durot (500 free), Dana Kirk (200 fly) and Cassidy Krug (1-meter diving) picked up one win each. The Cardinal also won the meet-opening 400 medley relay with a team of Bishop, Bruce, Kirk and Erica Liu.

Krug's 284.70 points in her win were her career-high for 1-meter diving dual meet competition.

Emily Goetsch (100 fly) and Blythe Hartley (3-meter diving) were individual event winners for USC. The Trojans also won the meet-closing 400 free relay with a team of Joanna Fargus, Cait Connealy, Goetsch and Kate Polich. Stanford actually had a faster team (3:28.31) of Erica Liu, Durot, Kirk and Boutwell but swam the event as an exhibition.

Bruce recorded the only NCAA "A" mark of the meet with a 2:14.23 time in the 200 breast.

Several Stanford swimmers recorded NCAA "B" times in the meet. Costella (16:26.79), Desiree Stahley (season-best 16:29.26) and Morgan Hentzen (season-best 16:37.45) reached the standard in the 1650 free to finish 1-2-3 in the event. Boutwell (1:48.93) and Durot (1:50.57) met the mark in the 200 free as the top two finishers. Bishop's 55.81 to win the 100 back was an NCAA "B" mark, as did the first and second-place finishes by Bruce (1:02.38) and Caverly (1:03.02) in the 100 breast. Kirk reached the standard in her 200 fly win (1:59.64), as did Boutwell in her 100 free victory (51.03), Bishop in her 200 back triumph (season-best 2:00.45), Durot in her 500 free win (4:50.56) and Bruce in her 400 IM victory (4:18.49).

Stanford will finish its 2004-05 regular season dual meet schedule at No. 10 California on Saturday, February 12 (12 pm, PT).
