Berkeley, Calif. - The bay area rivals fought Saturday for the first time in the 2005 season. The #3 California Golden Bears (8-1) took the early lead, scoring the first two goals of the match before #2 Stanford (8-2) got on the board with a shot by Michael Bury with 3:41 remaining in the first period. William Hindle-Katel also scored in the first and set the score at 3-2 going into the second period.
Cal showed a superior offense in the second quarter with a 3-0 run to put the Cardinal in a 6-2 disadvantage at the end of the first half. Both Stanford and Cal scored three goals each in the second half, including Hindle-Katel's second goal of the day with only one second remaining in the game. J.J. Garton and Peter Varellas also saw the net in the second half to close out the game at 9-5 in Cal's favor. Sandy Hohener made eight saves for Stanford in Saturday's match.
John Mann led Cal with four goals. Marty Matthies, Michael Sharp, Andrija Vasiljevic, Jeff Tyrrell, and Mike Hayes each tallied one goal for Cal. Goalie Nate Bennett made nine saves.
Stanford travels to Stockton to face #10 Pacific Saturday, October 8, at 12 noon. The Cardinal defeated the Pacific Tigers last Thursday, 14-4, at the Avery Aquatic Center. The team returns home Sunday, October 9, for the Alumni game at 11:00am.
