Stanford Falls to Pacific in Tournament Final

The University of Pacific Tigers captured the 19th Husky Dino Cup with a3-1 win over the Stanford Cardinal. The triumph for the Tigers was theirfirst in the tournament having lost in the Final of the 2002 Husky DinoCup to the Cardinal. Pacific went through the round robin portion of thetournament unbeaten defeating Stanford, the host University of Calgaryand the University of Regina.

The Tigers were dominant in the opening set and were never testedwinning easily 25-10.

Stanford came out stronger in set two taking an early 8-6 lead. TheCardinal took a 16-15 lead at the break and the teams were tied at22-22. The Cardinal went ahead 23-22 on Tiger misplay at the net butservice error by Stanford evened the set at 23-23. Ben Reddy's kill putthe Cardinal ahead 24-23 and Reddy's block after a long rally gaveStanford a 25-23 win to even the match at a set a piece.

The Cardinal took an early 8-7 lead in the third set but Pacific wentahead 20-16 forcing the Cardinal to take timeout. The Tigers won thenext five of six points to win the set 25-17.

In the third set, the two clubs virtually traded points until Pacificwent ahead 15-11 but Stanford cut the margin to 15-13 and trailed 16-13at the technical break. Stanford clawed back within one point making thescore 17-16 but Pacific took three of the next four points to lead20-17. The Tigers kept up the momentum winning the set 25-18 and thematch three games to one.

Reddy led Stanford with 14 kills and added five digs.

Pacific was also superior at the net with nine team blocks as comparedto four for their opponents and eight solo blocks as compared to fourfor Stanford.

The tournament all-stars were Chris Knoop (Regina), Rob Ellis (Calgary),Mitch Hazelett (Pacific), Jeremy Jacobs (Stanford), Reddy (Stanford),and Andreas Baboulidis (Pacific). The tournament Most Valuable Playerwas Adamson of Pacific.
