Stanford Beats UCLA In Overtime, 9-8

No. 4 Stanford (14-3) held off No. 3 UCLA (15-5) in a nail-biting match that came down to the last seconds of the game. The win brings Stanford to 3-0 in MPSF play and hands UCLA its first MPSF loss (2-1). Stanford remains undefeated at home winning six games in the Avery Aquatic Center this season.

After a Stanford comeback, the game was tied at 7-7 at the end of regulation time, sending the match into two three-minute overtime periods. Thomas Hopkins scored the winning goal to finish the game with merely seconds left on the overtime clock.

The first period ended with Stanford's Michael Bury as the only scorer giving the Cardinal the lead 1-0. UCLA came back in the second to leave the game tied 2-2 at the end of the first half, and the Bruins out-scored the Cardinal 4-0 in the third period to take the lead. Stanford had a large task at hand with UCLA in a 6-3 advantage going into the fourth period.

Michael Bury's second goal of the game at 5:54 sent the Cardinal into overdrive. Bury scored again less than a minute later, freshman William Hindle-Katel netted one at 2:50 in the fourth, and Peter Varellas cashed in on his first goal of the game with 1:25 remaining in the fourth quarter. UCLA's Logan Powell got a shot off with 4:44 remaining in the fourth period to leave the match tied, 7-7 at the end of regulation.

The first three-minute overtime period saw a goal by UCLA's Logan Powell and then answered by Hopkins' goal with 1:40 remaining in the period. In the second overtime period, with only 15 seconds remaining on the clock, Hopkins scored the final goal of the game giving Stanford the victory, 9-8.

UCLA's John Blanchette and David Pietsch each scored two goals. Cameron Smith, Marco Santos, and Matthew Jacobs each scored one goal for the Bruins. Goalie Will Didinger had 10 saves on the day.

Hopkins led Stanford scoring with four goals on the day, followed by Bury with an impressive three goals. Varellas and Hindle-Katel each had one goal against the Bruins. Sandy Hohener made 13 saves in today's match.

Stanford looks to continue its winning streak at home in tomorrow's 12:00pm match versus #5 Pepperdine at the Avery Aquatic Center.
