Stanford Record Improves To 8-2 After Today's Victory Over Pacific, 9-2

Stockton, Calif. - Third-ranked Stanford (8-2) opened MPSF play this afternoon with a 9-2 win over #10 Pacific in Stockton. This was the Cardinal's second consecutive win against the Tigers this season, dropping Pacific to 7-6 on the season.

Stanford took a powerful lead with a 6-0 sweep in the first half, scoring three goals in the first and second periods each before Pacific got on the board with 5:26 remaining in the third. Stanford scored the next three goals, one in the third period and two in the fourth. Adam Zobler was the only Pacific scorer in today's match, finishing the game with another goal on a four-meter penalty in the last period.

Senior Peter Varellas was the leading scorer for the Cardinal today with a strong four goals, while Tyler Drake, Ryan Fortune, J.J. Garton, William Hindle-Katel, and Thomas Hopkins all scored one goal in the match.

Stanford's goalie Sandy Hohener out-saved all-star Pacific goalie Marko Popovic, 8-6.

Tomorrow, October 9, the present Stanford players will take on some of the great water polo players of the past in the always exciting Men's Water Polo Alumni game. The match begins at 11:00AM at the Avery Aquatic Center.
