Irvine, Calif. - Third-ranked Stanford dropped its second loss this weekend to No. 6 UC Irvine (14-10, 4-2) in an 8-5 upset at the Anteater Aquatics Complex. The Cardinal stands at 15-5 this season, and 4-2 in the MPSF. Stanford fell to an early 3-0 run by the Anteaters in the first quarter, and struggled to recover for the remainder of the match.
The Cardinal scored three goals in the second period to decrease Irvine's advantage to 5-3. But the Anteaters held off the Cardinal in the second half, never allowing Stanford to close the gap to less than two goals.
Tyler Drake, William Hindle-Katel, Thomas Hopkins, Marcello Pantuliano, and Peter Varellas each scored one goal apiece for Stanford. Goalie Sandy Hohener made eight saves against the Anteaters.
UC Irvine senior Nate White led the Anteater attack with three goals.
The Cardinal returns home to face UC Santa Barbara Saturday, November 12, at 12noon.
