Seattle, Wa - The fourth-ranked Stanford women's volleyball team, depleted by injuries in recent weeks to two of its starters, gave it their best shot but it wasn't enough as the Cardinal fell in three games to the second-ranked and unbeaten Washington Huskies, 30-21, 30-26, 30-16 in a Pacific-10 match Friday night before 4,343 fans at Bank of America Arena.
Junior outside hitter Kristin Richards led Stanford's attack with 13 kills, ten digs and three blocks. Freshman middle blocker Foluke Akinradewo added ten kills.
In game one, Stanford jumped to a quick 2-0 lead on a kill and a block solo by Akinradewo, but then at 8-8, the Huskies scored seven of the game's next nine points to take a commanding 15-10 lead. From that point on, Stanford could not get any closer than three points, 15-12. Washington then built up a 29-21 lead, and ended game one (30-21) on a kill by Sanja Tomasevic. Tomasevic collected 13 of Washington's 22 kills in game one. Washington hit .360 compared to .256 for the Cardinal. Akinradewo collected five of Stanford's 14 kills in game one.
Game two was a slugfest. The game was tied 12 times with neither team able to gain more than a two point advantage. Then with the game tied at 21-21, Washington scored three straight points to force the Cardinal into a time out. The Huskies then upped the lead to 28-23, but three straight points by Stanford cut the margin to 28-26, and now Washington was calling a timeout. However, the Huskies scored the next two points, including the game winner on a kill by Tomasevic to win game two (30-26).
Stanford never led in game three. The Huskies decided the game early with a 6-0 run that gave the home team a 13-4 advantage. The Cardinal could never get any closer than six points.

Sophomore setter Bryn Kehoe rejoined the team on Thursday in Seattle to provide moral support on the sidelines after undergoing surgery on Tuesday (Nov 1). to repair a broken right hand suffered in practice a day earlier ... Kehoe is expected to be out of action three-to-six weeks ... Freshman outside hitter Cynthia Barboza underwent successful surgery on her left knee on Thursday (11/3) to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament ... Barboza will now undergoe an extensive rehabilition process for several months ... With eleven digs against Washington, senior libero Courtney Schultz now has 998 career digs.

Stanford's radio trio of Brad Burton, Andrew Rogers and Rebecca Harlow have been providing excellent coverage of the volleyball team on KZSU Radio (90.1 fm) this year ... Burton and Rogers are on his current road trip to the Pacific Northwest ... Rogers, who is a Human Biology major with plans on becoming doctor, has been studying extensively for his class in Psychology 137 (Birds to Words - Cognition, Communication and Language) ... A quick look at a paragraph in a chapter in his book suggests that "axiomatic to received psychological theories of categories and categorizations is the notion that Wittgenstein demonstrated in the philosophical investigations that categories are not defined in terms of necessary and sufficient conditions, but are instead determined by "family resemblances." ... Are you kidding??? ... Even Rogers had to re-read that paragraph several times to understand what was being written ... Once again, time on the road is invaluable ... Two freshmen, Erin Waller and Foluke Akinradewo, studied and took a midterm exam in Chemistry when the team arrived at the hotel late Wednesday night ... One thing about Seattle, it is definitely one of the favorite places to visit on the Pac-10 trails ... Although rainy and cold on this Thursday in the Pacific Northwest, the bus ride from the hotel to the Washington campus is scenic with rays of sunset shining on the skyscrapers of this city ... Although not as expensive to live as in the Bay Area, Seattle is getting there ... Early Friday morning, the Cardinal will travel to Spokane (home of junior Jennifer Wilson) and then take a 90 minute bus ride to Pullman to play Washington State ... GOOD NIGHT!!! TMTM
