Los Angeles, Calif. - No. 1 USC took an 8-7 victory in overtime over third-ranked Stanford to remain the only team still undefeated in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play. Stanford moves to 15-4 overall with a 4-1 record in MPSF action, while USC improves to 17-1 and 4-0 in league play.
Stanford trailed by two at the half, but the Cardinal evened the score at 5-5 in the fourth period on back-to-back goals by Peter Varellas. With the score knotted at five, the squads advanced to overtime, where the Trojans took a 7-5 lead on a converted four-meter penalty shot and a man-up opportunity, but the Cardinal scored another pair of goals to tie the match at 7-7.
Juan Delgadillo scored the game-winning goal for the Trojans with just three seconds to play. Delgadillo's first shot was stopped by Stanford keeper Sandy Hohener, but Delgadillo snagged the rebound and found the back of the net to secure the USC victory.
Stanford will be back in action tomorrow, as the Cardinal travels to UC Irvine for a noon match-up.
