No. 5 Stanford Advances In NCAA Tournament

Stanford, Ca - Junior outside hitter Kristin Richards collected 22 kills along with seven digs to lead the fifth-ranked Stanford women's volleyball team to a 30-25, 30-20, 30-21 victory over Nevada in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday night at Maples Pavilion.

Freshman outside hitter Erin Waller added a career-high eleven kills in 16 attempts (.562). Stanford hit .287 while the Cardinal defense held the Wolfpack to a .160 hitting percentage. Salaia Salave'a led Nevada with 12 kills in 23 attempts (.391) along with four digs and three blocks.

"The team has been through a lot this year," said Richards. "I'm trying to be there for my teammates. I think everybody is doing a great job."

Senior setter Katie Goldhahn collected 40 digs. "Katie has stepped in for the injured Bryn Kehoe and has done a good job," said head coach John Dunning. "She deserves some attention."

Stanford will face 15th-ranked Santa Clara in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Maples Pavilion. In the first match of the evening, five Santa Clara players scored in double figures as the No. 15 Broncos raced to a 23-30, 30-23, 30-20, 30-23 victory over Sacramento State. Brittany Lowe and Annalisa Muratore led the Bronco attack with 17 kills each. Anna Cmaylo added 16 kills and Kim McGiven checked in with 15. Caroline Walters had 28 digs. Lindsay Haupt tallied 14 kills while Atlee Hubbard had 13 kills for Sacramento State.

"Santa Clara has had a great season," said Dunning. "They have a lot of weapons. Santa Clara is well coached. We'll have to play at a high level. We'll be playing a great team."
