Stanford, Calif. - Fourth-ranked Stanford (2-0) tops #11 UC Davis (3-2) in a 9-7 victory this afternoon at the Avery Aquatic Center. The first quarter capped at 1-1, with UC Davis scoring the first goal of the game in a 6-on-5 rally and Stanford catching a tying goal with 1:25 left in the period. Stanford took over the lead early in the second period and held it until the end. Thomas Hopkins' spin-around shot to score in the third period brought the Cardinal to their largest lead at 9-5.
Stanford had five players score with Tyler Drake leading the way at three goals, Hopkins and William Hindle-Katel both with two, and Ryan Fortune and Michael Bury each netting one goal in the first period. Sandy Hohener started the game at goalie and closed with nine saves.
UC Davis split their scoring six ways, with Kevin Bacharach scoring two goals, both in the fourth period. Patrick Jacobson scored the first goal of the game. Josh McNeely and Joseph Smith both scored on ejections in the second period. Jesse Tweed and David Welch netted back-to-back goals in the third period to narrow Stanford's lead to 6-5 before the Cardinal scored the next three goals. The Aggies' goalie, Mike McGee, tallied nine saves throughout the game.
Stanford takes on #20 UC Santa Cruz (1-3) Sunday, September 11 (12:00pm) at the Avery Aquatic Center.
