Stanford, Calif. - Fourth-ranked Stanford (1-0) opened the 2005 season this afternoon with a 19-4 win over Santa Clara (0-1) at the Avery Aquatic Center. Early in the first quarter, the game was knotted at 1-1, but Stanford netted six straight goals to close out the first period and never looked back. Stanford took a 12-2 lead at the halfway point and went on to win the game, 19-4.
Ten different players scored for the Cardinal today, with senior Thomas Hopkins leading the way with four goals -- all in the first four and a half minutes of play. Freshman William Hindle-Katel scored his first collegiate goal in the second quarter and two more on the day to finish second in the game in scoring. Senior Peter Varellas, junior J.J. Garton and sophomores Michael Bury and Forrest Schwartz all added two goals apiece, while juniors Tyler Drake and Marecello Pantuliano, sophomore Andrew Drake, and freshman Chris Jacobson each tallied his first goal of the season.
Stanford split the goal-tending responsibilities four ways, with sophomore Sandy Hohener earning the start. Hoehner, junior Beau Stockstill, freshman James Sandman and junior David Carlson each allowed just one goal per quarter and combined for six saves on the day.
Santa Clara's Kevin Starry netted the first Bronco goal, tying the match at 1-1 just 1:08 into the game, but his squad did not score again for almost 10 minutes until Jack Wall converted a 6-on-5 attempt. In the third quarter, Tommy Hendrickson tacked on the second man-up goal for Santa Clara and in the final period, Charlie Moore scored on an ejection to cap the Broncos scoring.
Stanford will be back in action next weekend, with a pair of games at the Avery Aquatic Center. The fourth-ranked team in the nation will host UC Davis on Saturday and UC Santa Cruz on Sunday. Both games are set to begin at noon.
