Stanford, Calif. - No. 3 Stanford (12-0, 3-0 Pac-10) rolled on with a convincing 182-112 victory over Arizona State in a short-course yards meet at the Avery Aquatic Center on Saturday. Andrea Axtell won both the 100 and 200 back, while Brooke Bishop captured the 100 and 200 free to lead the Cardinal swimmers. Cassidy Krug swept the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events to pace Stanford's effort on the boards. The Cardinal dominated from the start, winning the first 10 events of a meet that was never in question.
"I was really proud of our team this weekend," said Stanford head coach Lea Maurer of her team's sweep over Arizona and Arizona State on Friday and Saturday. "Arizona was one of the top teams in the country, and they swam fast yesterday, but we were able to respond and stack up some points. This sweep was hopefully the first step to having a great meet in March (at the NCAA's)."
Lauren Costella (1000 free), Laura Davis (200 fly), Erica Liu (100 breast), Madeline Rovira (50 free) and Desiree' Stahley (500 free) added one win each for the Cardinal. Stanford also won the meet-opening 200 medley relay.Amy Konowalik (200 breast, 200 IM) and Caitlin Andrew (100 fly) were the only individual winners for Arizona State. The Sun Devils also won the meet-closing 200 free relay.
Stanford jumped out of the gates with its victory in the 200 medley relay as a team of Laura Wadden, Liu, Dana Kirk and Bishop recorded a time of 1:43.97.
Costella then won the 1000 free in 10:00.90 and kept swimming to record an NCAA "B" qualifying time of 16:33.43 in the 1650 free.
Bishop (1:48.71, NCAA "B"), Rovira (1:51.06) and Hentzen (1:53.07) then took the top three spots in the 200 free as the Cardinal continued to establish its dominance.
Axtell followed with her first victory of the day in the 100 back (56.11), just missing out on the NCAA "B" standard by .01 second.
Liu (100 breast, 1:04.06), Davis (200 fly, 2:02.92) and Rovira (50 free, 23.84) closed out the first half of the swimming portion of the meet with three more victories.
While the swimmers took a break, Krug won the 1-meter diving competition with 216.20 points.
Bishop got the Cardinal going again with her 100 free win (49.75) in a race that Andrew also recorded an NCAA "B" time of 50.93 in her second-place showing.
Axtell closed out Stanford's 10-event run with a victory in the 200 back (1:58.24, NCAA "B") before Konowalik finally broke the run by winning the 200 breast (2:17.72, NCAA "B").
Stahley (4:57.17) prevented back-to-back Arizona State wins when she was the first of four Stanford swimmers at the front of the 500 free.
Caitlin (53.90) outswam Kirk (54.16) to win the 100 fly in arguably the most exciting event of the meet as both swimmers notched the NCAA "B" standard, but the meet was already well in hand for the Cardinal.
Krug (252.50) dominated the 3-meter diving competition while the swimmers took their second break.
When action resumed in the pool, Konowalik was the official winner of the 200 IM (2:09.71) but was 4.02 seconds behind Stanford's Laura Davis (2:05.69), who was swimming the event exhibition.
The Sun Devils did outrace the Cardinal in the 200 free relay to conclude the meet as a team of Andrew, Jen Beckberger, Heidi Schmidt and Laura Ullrich recorded a time of 1:33.59, just missing a pool record that was set by Stanford in 2005 by .04 seconds and picking up an NCAA "B" mark.
Stanford continues a busy portion of its dual meet schedule with a pair of meets at No. 7 UCLA and No. 12 USC next Friday (January 27) and Saturday (January 28) in Los Angeles. The first race is scheduled to begin each day at 1:00 pm, PT.
