Long Beach, Calif. - Stanford is tied for fourth after the first day of competition at the 2006 Pac-10 Women's Swimming and Diving Championships on Wednesday. The two-time defending Pac-10 champions finished fourth in the 800 free relay and fifth in the 200 medley relay. Arizona and California are tied for the team lead after Wednesday's action with 120 points each, followed by USC (108), Stanford and UCLA (102 each), Arizona State and Washington (94 each), and Oregon State and Washington State (84 each).
Stanford's top team checked in with a season-best and NCAA "B" time of 1:40.98 in its fifth-place 200 medley relay finish with a team of Fiona O'Donnell-McCarthy, Kristen Caverly, Dana Kirk and Alexa Merz. Arizona (Marshi Smith, Erin Sieper, Lara Jackson, Anna Turner) won the event that featured the top five teams within 1.38 seconds of each other with an NCAA "A" mark of 1:39.60.
The best Cardinal group was fourth in the 800 free relay with a team of Brooke Bishop, Elizabeth Durot, Madeline Rovira and Desiree Stahley. The foursome's 7:14.94 time was also a season-best and NCAA "B" mark. Bishop's leadoff 1:48.98 was also an NCAA "B" time and just off her season-best of 1:48.71. California captured the race in an NCAA time of 7:08.31 with a team of Ashley Chandler, Lauren Andrews, Lauren Rogers and Erin Reilly.
"We had a solid performance today and some great swims," said Stanford head coach Leau Maurer. "We hope we can continue the momentum through the meet, and we're looking forward to a great day tomorrow."
The four-day short-course yards meet continues with the second day of action on Thursday with the prelims beginning at 11 am, PT, and the evening finals session starting at 6 pm, PT. Five more of the meet's 21 events will be contests with the 500 free, 200 individual medley, 50 free, 1-meter diving and 200 free relay scheduled to take place. All diving competition is being held at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatics Center in Federal Way, Washington.
