Sender Ties For Fourth At Winter Cup, Selected To National Team

Las Vegas, Nev. - Stanford enjoyed a strong showing on day two of Winter Cup competition Saturday evening, with former Cardinal David Durante winning the competition for the second straight year and current sophomore David Sender finishing tied for fourth. With the top six finishers in the all-around final named to the 2006 senior national team, both Sender and Durante will join the national squad. The national team will consist of fourteen gymnasts in all, including the top six finishers in the all-around final, six more gymnasts based on a points system established by the Men's Program Committee, and two additional gymnasts selected by the Men's Program Committee.

After posting a score of 86.100 on day one, Sender tallied a second-day score of 87.800 and completed the competition with a total of 173.900. Sender nabbed three top-ten event finishes after combining scores from both days, including finishing fifth overall on the still rings (29.300), eighth on the parallel bars (28.850) and tenth on the floor exercise (28.950).

Jason Shen finished 14th in the all-around after two days of competition with a final combined score of 167.500 and a second-day total of 83.300. Shen nabbed three top-15 finishes, including 12th on the high bar (28.200), T14th on the floor exercise (28.200) and 15th on the parallel bars (28.100).

Juniors Dylan Carney and Alex Schorsch competed in one event each Saturday night. Carney finished second overall on the floor exercise with a combined total of 30.150 and posted a score of 15.050 (A=5.900, B=9.150) during the second night of competition. Schorsch finished the competition strongly with a score of 15.300 (A=6.200, B=9.100) on the still rings Saturday night. Schorsch's combined score of 30.400 earned him fourth place overall for the event.

Stanford alum David Durante ('02) took top honors at the Winter Cup for the second straight year, tallying a two-day total of 177.700. Durante posted a day-two all-around score of 89.550 and earned four top-ten finishes, including first on the parallel bars (30.450), fourth on the high bar (29.400), sixth on the pommel (28.550), and tied for eighth on the still rings (29.100). Durante posted a score of 15.400 (A=6.100, B=9.300) during day one and 15.050 (A=6.100, B=8.950) on day two to win the parallel bars.

The 2006 Winter Cup showcased a strong presence of collegiate teams. Of the 12 gymnasts selected to the national team from the competition, seven currently compete on collegiate teams. Stanford, California, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Penn State, Iowa and Ohio State all qualified an athlete to the senior national team.

The Cardinal men return to action at home versus California on Saturday, February 11 (7:00pm).
