Stanford, Calif - The second-ranked Cardinal never trailed in Sunday evening's game against UC Berkeley. In a physical contest that saw thirteen ejections and a yellow card issued to Bears' coach Richard Corso, the Cardinal got timely scoring across the board and capitalized on another strong effort from goalie Meridith McColl (Mission Viejo, CA), who finished the game with ten saves.
Stanford Sophomore Jacquelyn Gauthier (Irvine, CA) netted two goals in the contest while six other Cardinal players tallied a goal as well. Their scoring was capped by Junior Katie Hansen (Coronado, CA) when she converted a four-meter penalty shot in the fourth quarter.
In a game where emotions were high, Stanford narrowly led 2-1 at the end of the first quarter, before pulling away for a 5-2 halftime lead. The game lived up to its hype as an intense and bitter showdown between the two rivals. The normally even-tempered Cardinal had seven ejections in the game. However they still played strong on the ensuing man advantages, only allowing one goal to be scored on the penalty.
The Cardinal (14-3, 7-1 MPSF) made it six Big Splash victories in a row over Cal (11-8, 5-3 MPSF), and now have a four game winning streak going into next weekend's games. The Cardinal will host UC San Diego Friday April 7, San Diego State Saturday April 8, and Arizona State Sunday April 9 to complete their regular season.
