Stanford Wins Session One Qualifier At NCAA Championship

Norman, Okla. - No. 2 Stanford Men's Gymnastics (23-4) posted a team score of 215.900 this afternoon to win Session One of the NCAA Qualifier in Norman, Okla. No. 6 Penn State tallied a score of 213.450 to place second, while No. 7 Iowa grabbed the final qualifying position in third with 212.425. Sophomore Sho Nakamori claimed the all-around title from Session One with a season-best score of 54.025, also winning the floor exercise (9.500) and pommel horse (9.300). Junior Peter Derman tied for first on the still rings with a score of 9.500, sharing the title with Penn State's Tommy Ramos.

Stanford, Penn State and Iowa will advance to tomorrow night's Team Final at 7:00 pm CT, joined by the top three teams from Session Two that will occur tonight at 7:00 pm. The top three individuals from each event today not on one of the qualifying teams will also advance to tomorrow night's final. From there, individuals will qualify for the Individual Event Finals on Saturday night (7:00 pm). To qualify for Saturday's individual event finals, an individual must finish in the top ten on their respective apparatus in Friday night's competition with no more than three gymnasts per school on each event.

The Cardinal won four of six team events, beginning with the floor exercise with a team score of 36.425. Nakamori posted a season-best 9.500 to win the event, followed by Ohio State's Jimmy Wickham in second with 9.400. Junior Dylan Carney place eighth for Stanford with a 9.225, followed by junior Brice Rolston in 12th with 8.900 and sophomore Jason Shen in 15th with 8.800.

Nakamori claimed a second win on the pommel horse with season-best score of 9.300, helping Stanford to an event-winning 34.150. Penn State's Derek Helsby finished second with 9.000 and the Cardinal's Nate Downs was fourth with 8.750. Rolston tied for tenth with a score of 8.100. Stanford's momentum carried through to the still rings as Derman grabbed a share of the top spot with a score of 9.500 and the Cardinal posted a score of 36.800 for the team win. Freshman Bryant Hadden tied for fifth with 9.200, followed by sophomore David Sender in eighth with 9.100. Junior Alex Schorsch posted a score of 9.000 to round out the top ten finishers on the event.

On the vault, Sender tallied 9.300 for fourth place, behind top-finisher Wickham of Ohio State with 9.525. Senior Sean Doolan tied for fifth with 9.200, while Carney was eighth with a score of 9.100. Sophomore Eli Alcaraz scored 9.050 to tie for ninth place as the Cardinal took a fourth team victory with 36.650.

Sophomore Jason Shen was Stanford's top finisher on the parallel bars in fourth with a score of 9.125. Ohio State's Nic Searcy won the event with 9.300. Sender was sixth with 9.050, while sophomore Chris Harper finished 13th (8.750) and Nakamori was 14th (8.700). The Cardinal tallied a team score of 35.625 on the parallel bars for second place, behind first-place Minnesota (35.725).

In the final event, Stanford finished second on the high bar with a team score of 36.250, trailing Iowa in first with 36.750. Nakamori tied for third on the event with a score of 9.300, his best score of the season on the event. Shen was 11th with 9.150, while Sender and Carney tied for 15th with 8.900. Willie Ito of Ohio State won the high bar with a top score of 9.600.

Nakamori seized his first all-around victory of the season this afternoon, tallying a score of 54.025. Penn State's Helsby was second with 54.000 and Iowa's Michael Reavis was third with 52.850. Sender finished fourth all-around with a score of 52.800

The Cardinal squad now advances to the Team Finals tomorrow at 7:00 pm in Norman, Okla. From there, the top 10 finishers on each event will continue on to the Individual Event Finals Saturday (7:00 pm), with no more than three gymnasts per school on each event.
