Bruins Hand Stanford 6-1 Loss

April 7, 2006

Stanford saw its five match winning streak come to an end today as the No. 11 Bruins beat the No. 12 Cardinal 6-1 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The loss moved UCLA (14-4, 3-0) into first place in the Pac-10 Conference and dropped Stanford to 11-3 overall and 2-1 in league play. The Cardinal, which beat the Bruins 4-3 in February, will play at USC tomorrow.

Stanford needed to win four of the six singles matches after losing the doubles point to UCLA. The Bruins, however, scored the first three victories in singles to clinch the match. Chris Surapol beat Stanford's Blake Muller at No. 5, 6-0, 6-1 to put the Bruins on top 2-0.

UCLA made it 3-0 when Stanford's Matt Bruch was forced to retire due to injury at No. 1 singles. Bruch, ranked 14th in the nation, was losing to the Bruin's Benjamin Kohlloeff, the No. 1 ranked singles player in the nation, 6-4, 4-1 before an injury forced him to retire. UCLA clinched the match at No. 6 singles when Michael Look deposed of the Cardinal's Phil Kao, 6-4, 6-2.

The Cardinal's lone win came at No. 3 singles where senior KC Corkery, ranked No. 24 in the nation, beat UCLA's Mathieu Dehaine, who is ranked No. 78, 7-5, 6-3.

UCLA finished off the match by recording wins at the No. 4 and No. 2 positions. Philipp Gruendler beat Stanford's James Pade 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 at No. 2.

The Bruins took a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point. UCLA's Philipp Gruendler and Benjamin Kohlloeff, the No. 3 ranked doubles team in the country, beat Stanford's top team of Corkery and Bruch, 8-5. Stanford won the No. 2 doubles match as Pade and Muller beat Abid and Surapol by an 8-4 score. Dehaine and Jeremy Drean of UCLA beat Stanford's Wan and Jon Wong, 8-4, at the No. 3 doubles position as UCLA went into singles play with a 1-0 advantage.
