Stanford, Calif. - Freshman Lauren Silver (Long Beach, CA) recorded a hat trick and helped the No. 2 Cardinal take a tight 7-2 victory over No. 7 San Diego State on Saturday evening at the Avery Aquatic Center. With the win, the Cardinal extended their winning streak to 6 games and improved to 17-3 overall and 8-1 in MPSF play. SDSU drops to 18-8 and 4-5.
The Aztecs got on the board first with an ejection goal by Rachel Serna two minutes into play, but Stanford junior Katie Hansen (Coronado, CA) fired back with a pair of goals to give the Cardinal a 2-1 lead at the end of one frame.
In the second period, the Stanford offense came alive as it got scores from sophomore Jacquelyn Gauthier (Irvine, CA), Silver, and senior Scotti Shafer (Carlsbad, CA). Meanwhile, the Cardinal played tenacious defense and held SDSU scoreless to take a 5-1 halftime lead.
The third frame proved a defensive battle for both teams as only one shot reached the back of the net, this time at the hand of SDSU's Stacy Werner. Werner's goal brought the Aztecs back to within a score of 5-2.
In the final period, Stanford and SDSU exchanged possession after possession for more than four minutes before Stanford's Silver netted her second goal of the match at the 2:47 mark. Silver would add another goal for insurance with 35 seconds to go in the game and the Cardinal closed out a 7-2 MPSF victory.
Both goalkeepers had very strong games, with the Aztecs' Sarah Kilgore posting 9 saves - 6 in the first half - and Stanford's Meridith McColl blocking 8 of her own. McColl, a junior from Mission Viejo, CA, had an amazing 7 saves in the second half of play.
Next up for Stanford is Senior Day and the final home match of the 2006 season as the Cardinal take on No. 10 ASU at the Avery Aquatic Center at 1:00 PM on Sunday.
