Sailors Qualify for All Three Spring Nationals

May 1, 2006

Treasure Isl., - The Stanford Cardinal Coed Sailors made program history this weekend after they finished 2nd at the Pacific Coast Conference Dinghy Championships. The Cardinal held off UC Irvine to take second place and the second berth to the ICSA Nationals Dinghy Championship, to be held May 31-June 2 at College of Charleston, SC.

Last weekend the Women dominated the Women's qualifiers and Friday the Coeds commanded the Team Race qualifiers, earning berths to both championships. It is the first time in recent history - going back to the 1980's - that the program has accomplished this. "We dominated both women's and team racing, so second at the Dinghies is fine," commented Head Coach Jay Kehoe.

The 18-race regatta was hosted by the Cal Sailing Team at their home waters in Treasure Island. Conditions ranged from light air (3 knots) to windy (18 knots). The versatile Cardinal squad made it happen, "Going into the last race we were tied," explained Coach Kehoe, "Emery and Taylor were able to push UCI over the starting line, forcing them to return to the line to re-start." They then took charge to win the race, insuring the Cardinal 2nd place and a berth at Nationals.

Sailing in A-Division for the Cardinal were skipper Brian Haines and crews Kelly McKenna and Becca Levin. The Stanford A finished 4thin division. The Stanford B-Division team consisted of two teams; Eddie Conrad and crew Anna Vu, and Emery Wager and crew Taylor Grimes. The Stanford B earned 3rd in division.
