Provo, Ut - It is one of Stanford's long standing and prestigious school records. It is the women's 100 meters and until Friday, it had belonged to 1992 Stanford graduate Chryste Gaines, who later in the 1992 outdoor season won the NCAA title, and later went on to win the gold medal as part of the 400 meter relay team at the 1996 Olympics.
The 100 meter Stanford record now belongs to sophomore Chauntae Bayne-Hackett, who ran an 11.15 in the prelims on Friday afternoon at the NCAA West Regional at the Clarence Robison Track on the campus of Brigham Young University to break Gaines' previous record of 11.16 set 14 years ago. Bayne-Hackett's time is seventh-best in Pac-10 history and also broke the NCAA West Regional time of 11.21 set by Natasha Meyer of USC in 2003.
"One of my goals is to hold all three school records (100, 200, 400 meters)," said Bayne-Hackett, who captured the 400 meter school record in 52.35 to win the Pac-10 title (5/14/06) in Eugene.
Later in the day, Bayne-Hackett added more history to her athletic resume. Running in the prelims of the 200 meters, Bayne-Hackett ran a 22.78 to shatter Gaines' 1992 school recorde of 23.00.
Bayne-Hackett is a very competitive athlete who knows there is much more work ahead in Saturday's finals of the 100 meters. "I'm not as excited as I should be," admitted Bayne-Hackett. "After all, the best time of the day was 10.93." The 10.93 (wind-aided) time was turned by USC's Virginia Powell.
Erica McLain was Stanford's first national qualifier on a hot, Friday afternoon when she finished second in in the long jump with an effort of 21-2 (6.45m) which is just short of her career-best of 21-5 1/4 (6.53m) in capturing the Pac-10 Championship (5/13/06).
"I didn't realize that I had jumped that far (21-5, 6.45m) on my second jump," said McLain. "I didn't feel like I had a lot of energy, but I'm excited about going to the NCAA's." UCLA's Rhonda Watkins won the regional title with a leap of 21-6 (6.55m).
Sophomore Melissa Yunghans saved her best for last in the shot put and thus earned her first trip to the NCAA Championship. Yunghans unleashed a season-best throw of 52-1 3/4 (15.89m) on her final effort and moved from fifth place to fourth place and thus moved on to the NCAA Championships at Sacramento. Yunghans' effort also moved her to within reach of her career-best of 52-4 3/4 (15.97m) set last year.
"Pretty amazing," said Yunghans, when asked her reaction to reaching the NCAA Championships for the first time. "Hopefully with two weeks of practice, I can do even better at the NCAA's."
Danielle Maier also is going to the NCAA Championship with her fifth place finish in the javelin (158-11, 48.45m).
Entering the 2006 outdoor season, the career-best effort for Graeme Hoste in the pole vault was 16-6 3/4 (5.05m) at the 2005 Cardinal Invitational. On Friday at the West Regional, Hoste vaulted a career-best 18-1 (5.51m, #2 all-time at Stanford) to finish third in the competition to earn a berth to the NCAA's in Sacramento.
Katy Trotter and Amanda Trotter finished second (16:57.29) and fifth (17:19.08), respectively, in the 5000 meters to gain entrance into the NCAA's. In the men's 5000 meters, Hakon DeVries is going to the NCAA's after finishing fifth in a time of 14:47.19.
Stanford athletes faired well in the prelims on Friday. The list included Ashley Freeman in the 800 meters who had the day's best time of 2:07.69. Other qualifiers included Michael Garcia in the 800 meters (1:50.43), Alicia Follmar in the 800 meters (2:09.58), Janice Davis in the 100 meters (11.24, #3 all-time at Stanford) and the 200 meters (23.24, #3 all-time at Stanford), Nashonme Johnson in the 400 meters (53.42), and Rolf Steier in the 1500 meters (3:52.99).
Russell Brown qualified for Saturday's final in the 1500 meters with a fifth place finish (3:50.41), but it wasn't easy. All the athletes are competing at high attitude (4,750 feet) and for Brown and the others, running in this environment can be a tough endeavor. "The altitude is really deceptive," said Brown, who recently finished second in the 1500 meters at the Pac-10 Championship. "I really didn't feel the effects of the altitude until the last 100 meters. This was as tough a race as I've had in the last two years. I'm sure it was for everyone."
At the end of the first day of competition, the Cardinal women reside in third place with 29 points. UCLA leads with 32.5 points followed by Arizona State with 31. In the men's team results, Stanford is seventh with 12 points. Arizona leads with 44 points.

Josh Hustedt had a large group of family and friends watch him compete in the long jump on Friday ... Hustedt, a sophomore, hails from Sandy, Utah, which is halfway between Salt Lake City and Provo ... Hustedt, earlier this year, tallied a career-best total of 7,070 points in the decathlon which also is seventh-best in school history ... Hustedt returned to Stanford this year after completing a two-year Mormon mission in Canada ... Hustedt finished the day at the Regional with a career-best mark of 24-6 1/2 (7.48m) ... The weather on Saturday will take a dramatic turn ... On Friday, temperatures hovered in the high 80's, but on Saturday, the temperature will drop into the low 60's with scattered thundershowers expected ... Jill Camarena, a seven-time All-American in the shot put and discus at Stanford, is on the BYU track & field staff as a strength coach ... Camarena, who finished third in the shot put at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Trials, received her history degree from Stanford and is currently pursuing a master's degree in exercise science at BYU ... Although Jakki Bailey did not advance to Saturday's final in the 100 meters, her time of 11.47 in the prelims was a career-best and fourth-best all-time in school history ... In 2007, Stanford will host the Pac-10 Championships at Cobb Track and Angell Field, the NCAA West Regional will be held at Oregon and the NCAA Outdoor Championship will be at Sacramento State.
