Stanford, Ca - The fourth-ranked Stanford water polo team scored three goals in the final 3:58 to record an 11-8 non-conference victory over fifth-ranked UC San Diego on Friday afternoon at the Avery Aquatic Center.
Two of Stanford's final three goals were scored by freshman Janson Wigo. Tyler Drake added an insurance goal with 25 seconds remaining as the Cardinal upped its season record to 3-0. UC San Diego fell to 8-1.
UC San Diego jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Jesse Casellini and Adi Jerkovic. The Tritons maintained a 3-1 lead in the second period before Stanford goals by Ryan Fortune at 6:29 and Janson Wigo knotted the score at 3-3. UCSD jumped in front at 5-3 by goals on scores by Casellini at 5:03 and Ty Lackey at 4:08. However, Stanford roared back with goals by Tyler Drake at 2:06 and with five seconds remaining before intermission.
Steven Donohoe put UC San Diego in front at 6:35 of the third period, but Janson Wigo tied the game at 4:34, and Stanford took the lead for the first time in the game at 1:22 on Tyler Drake's goal to make it 7-6.
Casellini scored at 7:22 of the fourth period to tie the game at 7-7. Lackey put UCSD in front at 8-7 with 6:22 to play. Will Hindle-Katel tied the game at 8-8 with 5:39 remaining.
Stanford hosts the NorCal Tournament on Saturday and Sunday at the Avery Aquatic Center. The Cardinal will open play at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday against Navy. The winner will play either Long Beach State or Pacific at 3:10 p.m. The championship game in the 16-team, 32-game tournament will be on Sunday at 5:50 p.m.
