SAN JOSE, Calif.(AP) -- Yonus Davis rushed for 184 yards and San Jose State rallied from a three-touchdown deficit to stun Stanford on Saturday, 35-34.
Adam Tafralis passed for one touchdown and ran for another as the Spartans (1-1), playing in front of the third-largest home crowd ever, won its fifth consecutive home opener.
Trent Edwards threw a career-high four touchdown passes, two of them to Evan Moore but Stanford lost to San Jose State for the first time since 2001.
The Cardinal (0-2) took advantage of a botched kickoff return and dropped punt to help score 27 straight points in the first half.
Moore caught four passes for 84 yards as Stanford played without senior receiver Mark Bradford, who left the game early with a right foot injury.
The Spartans scored on their first possession with Tafralis going the final yard for a 7-0 lead. Davis accounted for 32 of the 52-yard drive.
San Jose State forced the Cardinal to punt but Dwight Lowery fumbled the kick with Nick Frank recovering on the Spartans' 17-yard line. Edwards found Richard Sherman in the back of the end zone on the next play to make it 7-6.
On the ensuing kickoff, San Jose State let the ball bounce and Peter Griffin of the Cardinal fell on it, giving Stanford a first down at San Jose State's 19. Edwards found Moore in the end zone four plays later for an 11-yard touchdown, putting Stanford up 13-7.
Jim Dray caught a 19-yard touchdown pass, set up by Moore's 48-yard one-handed reception, early in the second quarter and Frank rushed for another score to give Stanford a 27-7 edge.
After the teams traded touchdowns, San Jose State closed to within 34-21 in the final minute of the half when Tafralis hooked up with James T. Callier on an 11-yard TD pass.
The Spartans opened the second half with an 80-yard drive. Patrick Perry bulled his way eight yards into the end zone for the score but Davis set it up with a 36-yard dash. He took a pitch, broke two tackles at the line, then cut back to the middle before being dragged down from behind.
Stanford fumbled the ball back to San Jose State on the next possession, with Aaron Gilbert recovering. Davis went 31 yards on the first play and James Jones raced 42 yards on another great run to put the Spartans up 35-34.
Jones cut across the field after running into trouble along one sideline, picking up a block from Tafralis that helped spring him for the go-ahead score.
Lowery intercepted Edwards' pass in the end zone late in the third quarter to preserve the lead and Demetrius Jones recovered a fumble with 1:29 remaining.
