Bruch Drops Three-Set Match in Finals of Sherwood Collegiate Cup

After reaching the finals in both singles and doubles today at the Sherwood Collegiate Cup, freshman Matt Bruch saw his chances of a tournament championship end with a hard-fought three-set defeat in the singles final and an 8-3 loss in the doubles final. The tournament, held at the Sherwood Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif., included eight of the top teams in the country.

Bruch, ranked fourth in the country in singles, was beaten by Matija Zgaga of Baylor, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 in the singles final. In doubles, Bruch and junior James Pade won their semifinal match 9-7 over Mohamid Abid and Chris Surapol of UCLA, then lost the final match to Ytai Abougzir and Chris Westerhauf of Florida State, 8-3.

Stanford's Chris Rasmussen and James Wan reached the doubles semifinals, but were beaten by Abougzir and Westerhauf, 8-1.
