Stanford, Calif. - Stanford Men's Volleyball opened their 2006 campaign this afternoon with a win over UC Santa Cruz at Burnham Pavilion on the Stanford campus. The Cardinal won the match in straight games, 3-0, with game scores of 30-19, 34-32 and 30-26. Senior Ben Reddy led the team with 13 kills, freshman Miki Groppi dished out 43 assists, and junior Brian Lindberg led the team with 11 digs. Senior middle blocker Chris Ahlfeldt hit .727 for the match, with eight kills and no hitting errors
The Cardinal dominated the first game, paced by senior William Clayton's six kills and Lindberg's three digs. Both teams battled the second game, with Stanford pulling out the victory 34-32. UC Santa Cruz fought off six game points before Ahlfeldt sealed the game with his sixth kill of the match.
Reddy led the Cardinal in the third game, posting five kills. The Cardinal ended the match with a team hitting percentage of .327, while UC Santa Cruz hit .224 for the match.
Stanford's next match will be on Friday, January 6th against UCLA at the UCSB Elephant Bar Tournament in Santa Barbara, CA. The match will begin at 1:00 PM.
