Stanford, Ca - UC Irvine's Colin Mello scored four goals, including the game winner with 1:57 to play to lift the No. 11 Anteaters men's water polo team to a 9-8 upset victory over fourth-ranked Stanford in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) game on Saturday afternoon.
The game was tied eight times before Mello scored the winning goal that sailed past Cardinal goalkeeper Sandy Hohener.
Tyler Drake led Stanford scorers with four goals including a penalty shot goal at 3:31 to tie the game at 8-8.
Ryan McCarthy, Ryan Fortune, J.J. Garton and Will Hindle-Katel added a goal apiece for Stanford which fell to 14-7 overall and 4-3 in the MPSF. UC Irvine upped its season record to 10-16 overall and 2-4 in the conference.
Stanford returns home to the Avery Aquatic Center on Sunday (noon) against Santa Clara.
