Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford wrestling team posted a 29-16 win over Cal State Fullerton this afternoon, in the squad's first Pac-10 dual of the season. Junior Tanner Gardner picked up his eighth-straight win, and the Cardinal won six of nine matches to earn the victory. Stanford improves to 2-2 on the season, while Cal State Fullerton falls to 0-1.
Three Cardinal wrestlers won by fall, as Gardner pinned Jaime Hernandez in 3:25 at 125 pounds, Rafael Chavez pinned Benny Garcia in 2:27 at 141 pounds and Brian Perry pinned Bobby Musser in 4:01 at 165 pounds.
Junior Josh Zupancic posted a 20-6 major decision over Brian Stills at 157 pounds and Luke Feist won his third-straight match with a 9-0 major decision over Ryan Budd at 174 pounds. Freshman Zack Giesen rounded out the Cardinal victories with a 6-5 decision over Ian Murphy.
"I'm really happy with how we wrestled overall," said Head Coach Kerry McCoy. "Our guys wrestled hard and scored a lot of bonus points, which made a difference. Zack Giesen had a huge win and continues to get better. Tanner Gardner continued his winning ways. Overall, it was a good result. This gives us some great momentum for the future."
The Cardinal returns to action tomorrow at the Fullerton Open, where the squad will have a chance to get an early look at four more conference opponents.
