Irvine, Ca - UCLA's Scott Davidson scored the game-winning goal with 1:22 remaining in the second overtime period to lift the third-ranked UCLA men's water polo team past fourth-ranked Stanford, 9-8, during Sunday's action at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Tourmament at UC Irvine's Anteaters Aquatics Complex.
Davidson's power-play goal was the only shot to find the back of the net for either team in both three-minute overtime periods.
Stanford had two three-goal leads in the third quarter, including an 8-7 lead with less than 2:30 to play in the game.
UCLA took a 1-0 lead just 1:35 into the game, but the Cardinal struck back a little more than a minute later on a goal from Michael Bury. Janson Wigo added the Cardinal's second goal with 2:07 left in the quarter. UCLA tied the game at 2-2 with 1:39 remaining in the first period, but Chris Jacobson scored on a 6-on-5 advantage to give the Cardinal a 3-2 lead at 1:13. However, with just 16 seconds left in the opening frame, UCLA's Grant Zider tied the game at 3-3.
Stanford gained a two-goal advantage midway through the second quarter to lead 5-3 at the break. Will Hindle-Katel fired a backhanded shot at 5:57 and Janson Wigo tallied his second goal of the match with 3:36 to play in the half.
Stanford twice led by as many as three goals (6-3 and 7-4) before the Bruins cut down Stanford's margin to 7-6 on a goal as time expired in the third period. UCLA's Krsto Sbutega tied the game, 7-7, at 4:11 in the final quarter. Drac Wigo scored on an assist from Janson Wigo at 3:19 to give Stanford an 8-7 lead, before Logan Powell added the game-tying goal for UCLA at 2:29.
Jimmie Sandman chalked up 13 saves for the Cardinal.
Stanford ended its season at 17-9.
