Tanner Gardner Takes Title at Reno Tournament of Champions

Dec. 20, 2006

Reno, Nev. - All 12 Stanford wrestlers picked up wins and three placed at the Reno Tournament of Champions in Reno, Nev. today. The Cardinal combined for 35 wins and junior Tanner Gardner won his second tournament of the year at 125 pounds. Junior Josh Zupancic finished second, placing for the fourth time this season. Junior Scott Loescher tallied six wins on his way to a third place finish.

Gardner went a perfect 5-0 on the day, topping two ranked wrestlers to capture the title. The Berryton, Kans. native earned a spot in the championship match with an 8-2 decision over No. 13 Luke Smith of Central Michigan. In the final, the Cardinal junior posted a 7-4 win over defending Pac-10 Champion Chad Mendes of Cal Poly, a wrestler currently ranking sixth in the nation.

At 157 pounds, Zupancic rattled off four consecutive wins, including an 8-4 decision over Brandon Girtz of Minnesota State Mankato in the semifinals, to advance to his second title match of the season. In the championship bout, Zupancic was edged by No. 20 Tyler Sherfey of Boise State, 1-0.

At 165 pounds, Loescher posted a decision over Dominic Ross of Clarion and a major decision over Jake McCoy of Oregon, before dropping into the consolation bracket with a loss to Trevor Stewart of Central Michigan. The junior battled back with four-straight wins, and finished the day by pinning Northwestern's Greg Hagel in the third place match. Teammate Brian Perry came within one match of placing, posting four wins before dropping a 3-1 decision to Loescher.

"We wrestled better than we did in Vegas, but we still have lots of areas to improve on," said Head Coach Kerry McCoy. "It was definitely a good showing though. Anytime we get competition in a tournament like this and place three guys, it's good. We got some great wins and saw some things that we need to improve on, but overall it was a good way to finish the year."

The Cardinal returns to action at the Southern Scuffle in Greensboro, NC, Dec. 29-30.
