In the opening night of the 2006 Volleyball Hall of Fame Morgan Classic in Springfield, Mass., Stanford battled Springfield College in a five game match that ended victorious for the Cardinal. With the win, their overall record improves to 4-9.
In the first two games, Stanford came out firing and calculated a total of 42 kills, closing the games at 30-24 and 30-22. But it was Springfield who dominated the third game.
The Pride pounded down 17 kills and averaged a .324 hitting percentage which only continued to increase while the Cardinal's fell from .279 to .057. Tied at two games each, the match went into the decisive finally rally.
Both the Pride and the Cardinal had two match points that could have ended the contest, but it was an assisted block by senior Jeremy Jacobs and freshman Brandon Williams that finally ended the fifth game at 19-17, Stanford.
Senior opposite Ben Reddy led Stanford with 30 kills and 12 digs. Fellow senior William Clayton also contributed 14 kills. Match leader in blocks was Cardinal Nick Manov with six.
Stanford returns to play this Saturday, February 11th at the Morgan Classic when they face-off against Penn State.
