Charleston, SC - The Stanford Women Sailors traveled to Charleston, South Carolina for the annual the season opener at the College ofCharleston on February 11-12. The storm that dumped the northeastwith snow pounded the southeast with wind and rain. Sailing conditions were tough, with 15-25 knot winds and 40-degree temperatures. Occasional 30-knot puffs and big waves made spectating fun. Eleven races were held in each division over Saturday and Sunday.
With the National Championship scheduled for Charleston in late May, all the top teams attended this event to get a taste of the tricky currents at the Charleston venue. Currently ranked 7th in the nation, the Stanford women battled in the top of the fleet against other top-ranked teams. Sailing in A Division, juniors Caroline Young and Becca Levin started the regatta with a win, but struggled with some deep finishes as the winds got stronger. The pair finished 7th in the A-Division.
Sailing in B-Division, sophomore skipper Evan Brown sailed with crew Marianna Beardsworth early in the regatta, when the wind was at it's strongest. On Sunday, Carrie Denning subbed in with Brown. The Cardinal B-Division finished 3rd.
With a combined score of 153, the Stanford Women finished 6th overall, "It is a solid start to our spring season," commented Head Coach Jay Kehoe. This weekend, the Coed sailors head to Charleston for their season opener.
