Stanford, CA - It's a necessary thing for a top team on the West Coast to head back east in the mid-season to test themselves against the eastern schools. This weekend both the Cardinal Team Race and Women's Teams proved to be top contenders.
Coming off a 3rd at last weekend's McIntyre Team Race at home, the Stanford Team Race Squad was anxious to mix it up at the annual St. Mary's Team Race at St.Mary's College of Maryland. Returning off of injured reserve was skipper Brian Haines, who was recovering from a broken rib last week. Crewing for Haines was Kelly McKenna. The duo paired up with Emery Wager/Taylor Grimes and Edward Conrad/Anna Vu.
Warm, spring-like conditions met Stanford Team, which make the transition to the east coast much easier. Light air of 5-10 knots Saturday and 5 knots and dying Sunday made the competition close, "We had some awesome battles with Georgetown, Hobart and Boston College, even though those were the races we lost, we came out feeling good, that we were on par with them," said assistant coach John Pearce.

6. Roger Williams 4-5

Conditions were similar one hour up the Maryland coast, where the Stanford Women competed at the Navy Spring Women's Regatta in Annapolis, Maryland. Sailing A Division were Caroline Young/Jo Madsen. After the first day, Young/Madsen were 2nd in A, but two sets of light air races dropped the duo to 4th in A Division. In B Division, skipper Liz Rountree and crew Becca Levin earned 2nd place. "The Women were phenomenal, they sailed a great regatta in conditions that were not our strength," explained head coach Jay Kehoe.

With Winter Quarter Finals around the corner, the team is off this weekend. They head to San Diego March 25th for Spring Break Training. Following the break, they have four weeks that make or break the season, with the Pacific Coast Collegiate Sailing Conference Championships on April 22-23 for the Women, April 28 for the Team Race Squad and April 29-30 for the Coed Team. Form those events, the top two teams will go on to the Intercollegiate Dinghy Nationals at the College of Charleston, from May 24 to June 1, 2006.
