Stanford finished second to Central Florida in the Grand Final of the Women's Lightweight Varsity 8+ event at the Pacific Coast Rowing Championships on Saturday, ending the Card's 4-year win streak at the regatta. The Novices won in a decisive manner, bringing gold back to Stanford for the first time in the Lightweight Novice 4+ event.
"We were pretty scratchy off the line, but we did a good job of coming back and leading the race for a bit," said Head Coach Al Acosta. "However, in the end Central Florida was far too good for us to catch with a less than perfect race."
In their final race of the season, Stanford's Lightweight Novice 4+ led from start to finish, winning their race by 28 seconds. "We're excited for the novices and their winning performance. They did a great job of improving throughout the year and beating a crew that they had lost to earlier in the season," Acosta said, referring to cross-town rival California's defeat of the Card Novice 4+ in early April.
